This photo was likely taken on 16 September 1916 when Oswald Boelcke and some of his pilots from Jasta 2 went to Armee-Flug-Park 1 to collect their new Albatros fighters. Boelcke stands at center with a walking stick and facing him (with clasped hands) is Alfred Keller, the CO of AFP1, Richthofen is behind, and partially obscured by, Keller.

This lesser-known image of Prof. Busch's drawings of Jasta 11 airmen is probably the one he referred to in his account of 28 July 1917. It is different than the much more popular version that served as the frontispiece for the 1933 edition of Der Rote Kampfflieger in that this one depicts Kurt Wolff's left arm in a sling and Lothar von Richthofen's portrait is absent. In Busch's 28 July entry, he also mentioned that he hoped to draw Lothar, who was recuperating in Germany from the wounds he had suffered on 13 May 1917, at Breslau in August. So what we see here clearly predated Der Rote Kampfflieger's 1933 frontispiece. We do not know the origin of this print however.

Folllowing pilot training, Richthofen flew Albatros two-seaters with Kampfstaffel 8 of Kampfgeschwader 2 over the Verdun sector. He seems subdued here in conversation with Kasta's 8 commanding officer, Hauptmann Victor Carganico, a pre-war military aviator and BAO veteran.

A well known picture of the Richthofen brothers with a Fokker Dr.I behind them. The first batch of operational Fokker Dr.Is arrived at JG I around 20 October 1917 and Lothar was wounded and put out of action the following 13 March 1918. This photo therefore originated betwee those dates and probably at Avesnes-Le-Sec airfield that the unit occupied from 25 November 1917 through 20 March 1918.

Pressentin joined the outfit on 15 March 1 918 and Osten was injured and put out of action on 28 March; so the picture originated sometime within those dates."
