„Diese Typenprüfungen waren eine Errungenschaft von Richthofen, der der Ansicht war, dass nicht irgendein alter Heimatfrontpilot, vor allem (nicht) einer, der für eines der Flugzeugunternehmen arbeitete, derjenige sein sollte, der bestimmt, was an der Front geflogen wird. Daher kamen Vertreter aller Jagdstaffeln an der Front zu diesen Tests. Die einzelnen Typen wurden getestet, und dann einigten sich die Herren untereinander darauf, welche Typen zum damaligen Zeitpunkt am besten geeignet waren ...“
