„17GW448 Der Rote Baron, hier beim Besuch des Bomberstützpunkts des Kampfgeschwaders 3 in Gontrode, Belgien, wo er sich mit Hauptmann Rudolf Kleine, dem Kommandeur des KG3 (links), berät; der Adjutant der Einheit, Oberleutnant Gerlich, steht in der Mitte. Das Eskortieren von Bombern war nicht nach Richthofens Geschmack, da er die Rolle des Jägers der des Verteidigers vorzog. Obwohl sie mit den Dreiflüglern ausgerüstet waren, flogen einige Piloten des JG 1 weiterhin die Albatros, da es mit den neuen dreiflügeligen Maschinen Kinderkrankheiten gab.“
